What a Way to end a Vacay!

MONDAY - AUGUST 27, 2012

Falling way behind on the blog posts. It was super busy while Alex was visiting us and then of course while we've been visiting in Texas. Will try to catch up on the last 4 weeks later. I'm posting tonight from First Choice Emergency Room near where Briana and Ivan live. This evening Briana invited the family over for a spaghetti dinner.

Erin, Jackson, Bryn, Margaret and Doug came.

We had a nice chat, but Darvin started having chest pain. He said it felt like a knife that was stabbing him on the front and back of his chest. I got him an aspirin from his bag in the car since we had all our stuff packed up and loaded in the trunk of the rental car in anticipation of spending our last night up at Erin and Russ's house in Aubrey. He was feeling nauseous and began having problems off and on with vomiting. So the Prilosec he later took I'm sure didn't stay down long enough to do any good. When he finally felt like there was a window of opportunity to get to Erin's we took a couple of 'barf bags' and made a run for it...Except he was so uncomfortable that I didn't think it was wise. So I suggested that we go to an urgent care center. We got the address of one that Doug and Margaret recommended except that my GPS didn't recognize the address so it headed us in the opposite direction. I decided to ignore the GPS so I turned around to go the way I knew. But I could tell Darvin was feeling worse and worse so we decided to go to a place that is across the street from Briana and Ivan's apartment. It is actually a freestanding mini-emergency room. It's open 24 hours a day so they shouldn't try to rush us in and out like they might at the urgent care that was supposed to close for the night within about half an hour of the time we would have arrived.

I'm currently playing the waiting game. Darvin didn't want me to go back to the exam room with him. So I get to sit in the waiting room alone worrying! I'm going to ask the receptionist if I can go back and talk to him for a few minutes.

UPDATE: They willingly took me back to the exam room, but Darvin was having a CT scan when they took me back. When he returned to the room I found out that they'd run an EKG, Urinalysis and some blood tests that all came back negative. We'll see what the results of the CT scan are. At this point the doctor suspects food poisoning, but Darvin didn't eat anything different than what the rest of us ate for dinner and his digestive track is super fast, so I wouldn't suspect that it was from his lunch at Wendys. Darvin thinks it's a spasm in his esophagus. Over the years he's become more and more sensitive to spicy food, so it may have been caused by the Buc-Ees jalapeno dip. No more spicy food for you Mr. Clement, unless we hear something else from the CT scan!

About 2 1/2 hours later and the doctor just came in and said that the CT scan looks pretty unremarkable other than the degeneration on Darvin's spine (already knew about that) and he shows some Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (which she didn't say anything about other than to mention it!). I think he needs to ask her about it and suggested to him that he do that very thing. Now it's just a waiting game. He has to be able to tolerate liquids without vomiting before they'll allow him to go home. So he's sipping some water now. They've given him zofran, morphine and phenergan for nausea and vomiting.

Doctor just came back in when I asked about the fatty liver she indicated that she didn't even catch it on the CT scan the radiologist did, so it's very minimal and all liver function tests came back fine. They're waiting to get results on one more blood test that they re-ran and then we should be able to head to Erin's.

All the tests came back fine, so it seems that Darvin's supposition is correct that it was a spasm in his esophagus (EDITOR'S UPDATE: Unfortunately it took about $7,000 worth of tests and medication to get that figured out. Ouch! And the first time around the insurance company denied the claim because we weren't at an HMA hospital...still waiting for them to re-process the claim).

Finally got to Erin's house around 1 a.m. Slept in and got to play with the Chatwin kids for a few hours before heading to the airport in the afternoon.
