WEEK OF JULY 23, 2012

Winding down. I can't believe in less than 48 hours I'll be heading for home with Alex. It should be a fun 3 weeks before we head back to Texas for Ashley's wedding celebration.

SATURDAY - JULY 28, 2012
Such a great day today!  Got to have fun 'catching up' with Abo and Nana at my niece Chloe's birthday at Chuck E Cheese!
Abo with the birthday girl Chloe!

Vona wasn't too excited about being at Chuck E Cheese she slept most of the party!
Then I got to 'play grandma' babysitting the Pascual brothers while Mommy and Daddy went out for dinner and a show for a birthday/anniversary date.  Ashley dropped me off poolside at Briana's apartment complex.
Swimming video just for Pops!

Alex was a super proud big boy all evening as he pooped and peed on the potty over and over again!
Alex's potty buddy Elmo

One of my favorite parts of the evening:  he pretended to be Calliou and pretended that I was Calliou's mommy.  He had 'mommy' make him some eggs, just like on the show! lol  That kid is the biggest character and has a great imagination!!  As it got later I kept asking him if he was ready for me to put his diaper on (in preparation for bed).  Each time he told me he didn't want his diaper on (surprise-lol!).  So another favorite part of the evening, when he finally crawled up next to me on the couch and fell asleep in my arms naked butt and all!  LOVE MY GRANDBABIES!!

FRIDAY - JULY 27, 2012
Briana, Ivan and the boys picked me up to head to Erin's for a combined birthday party for Briana and Caleb.
The birthday 'kids'!

Let me down Daddy!

It was another super fun family evening.  Margaret's youngest kids (Zipporah, Eden and Caleb) were so great with the younger kids, they played with and entertained all the babies.
Jarom and Margaret favored us with some piano music for a while.  We had cake and ice cream and sang to the birthday boy and girl and then played the 'Things' game.

Hey, Ivan's eyes are open...what's up with that?!

Briana indicated that she really enjoyed her birthday.  Both Erin and I gave her some props for her photography business and it was just a really fun, relaxing family night.
More baby photo props, Thanks Erin!!
I think we left around 10 or so.  The boys were starting to melt down as we left because they hadn't eaten dinner before going to Erin's.  So we stopped at Sonic and got some food, ate it and then went to the Shell station to get gas because the tank was on empty.

I remember hearing Ivan ask Briana if they should get a car wash (you can pay at the pump) and then Emmett started fussing again.  As I looked over to try to comfort him (I was sitting in the back seat between the boys in their car seats) I saw liquid spewing out all over the car.  My first feeling was a sort of surreal thought that we were getting a car wash and then the realization hit that we were still at the gas pump and it wasn't water spraying all over the car it was gasoline!  I hollered to Briana that there was gas spewing all over the place.  She jumped out of the car from her seat on the front passenger side and was frantically looking for the emergency shut off valve by the pump. Not seeing one she slammed the nozzle into the off position at the pump.  Ivan had been trying to return a redbox movie outside the convenience store when he noticed the commotion and rushed back over.  What a scary situation.  I told Briana that it was so fortunate that we had the windows rolled up.  We'd rolled them down at Sonic, otherwise that fuel would have spewed all over Emmett.  There was probably a good 3-5 gallons of gas that was all over the place before all was said and done.  Apparently the emergency shutoff is right at the entrance to the convenience store.  Note to self, make sure you look around and find emergency shutoff before filling a gas tank!

We were probably there a good hour to hour and a half before all was said and done.  Between assessing the incident, discussing it with the employee on staff, getting phone numbers and the name of the manager, etc.  Turns out that particular pump had just been 'fixed' the day before.  And the employee was trying to peg the whole incident on Ivan, telling him he was negligent because he walked away from the pump while fueling and he also suggested that it happened because Ivan didn't put the nozzle far enough into the gas tank.

Anyway after we'd been their for a while and Ivan determined that none of the gas had spewed onto the engine he had Briana pull the car forward so he could get some pictures of the gas spill.  She did and left the car on so we could get some air conditioning, but the car died.  She kept trying to start it and it kept dying!  So the whole way home the car kept 'gulping'.  I suggested that it could be a vapor lock and it turned out that's what it was.  Fortunately, I was right and it resolved on its own!  Never a dull moment!!!

WEDNESDAY - JULY 25, 2012
Look who's one month old today!!

Feeling tired today.  Rental drama: I have tenants in one house (the little house) that are always tattling about the neighbors next door (in the big house).  The little house is always worrying about the dog(s) at the big house.  There's only supposed to be one dog, and this is the 2nd time that they've had a 2nd dog.  The neighbors in the small house think that the dogs in the big house will get out and attack their cats.  Little house also said that the neighbors had moved someone in with them.  It turns out that it's the tenant's 19 year old niece who's babysitting nights for the tenants....Sometimes I get tired of being a landlady!  I tried to encourage both parties today to start talking to each other to work out their differences.  I hope they do!

I decided to call again on the car rental claim.  Apparently the claims adjuster with PurCo has been leaving me messages on my home phone.  I left a message for Debbie to call my cell phone tomorrow.  I hope they'll adjust the claim down.  American Express has paid about $126 for the actual replacement of the side view mirror, but they want me to pay a $50 administrative fee plus $79.99 for loss of use.  I hope to be able to negotiate down to $65 but I doubt they'll go for it.  At the worst I'm hoping for $100.  It'll be nice just to get this out of the way.
See the cracked section on the bottom of the mirror?  Does this look like $256 worth of damages to you?

I also woke up with a headache again.  I can't wait until I can go to the chiropractor when I get back.  I slept in later than I expected.  So I wasn't able to go for my 2 mile run this morning.  I'm going to do my Biggest Loser dvd and then hopefully will run tonight when it cools of a little.

TUESDAY - JULY 24, 2012
I didn't end up doing the Biggest Loser Workout last night, I felt too tired, so read my scriptures instead and went to bed.  I got up this morning around 7 a.m. and did my 3.5 mile run.  Actually went about 4.5 miles give or take.  I've been doing a run/walk since I've been in Texas.  Just don't seem to have enough energy to run the whole thing.  Hopefully I'll get back on track when I get home.  I am putting in at least the number of miles on the training schedule, just not running the whole thing.

I'm feeling much better this morning.  I went back to sleeping on one pillow as I hadn't felt like my ear crystals were displaced since that one day.  My neck feels much better this morning and I felt much more rested.  Ashley's got an appointment today for a haircut and eyebrow waxing and then she suggested I go over to Briana's to visit this afternoon.  Briana suggested that we take the boys to the library which sounds like a fine idea!
Alex's favorite toy at the library - foam blocks!

Emmett loves the library!

I need to go birthday shopping for Briana too.  Erin's hosting a party to celebrate Briana and Caleb's birthdays on Friday.  Darvin was in charge of Lindsey's birthday present.  Hopefully he's gotten it and sent it to her.

Here's to a better day than yesterday!!

MONDAY - JULY 23, 2012
Today Ashley and I took Vona to the Ear, Nose and Throat doctor.  Dr. Lee clipped her frenulum under her tongue.  The frenulum is a band of tissue which attaches the bottom of the tongue to the floor of the mouth.  Vona's was attached too close to the tip of her tongue.  When this happens they say you're 'tongue tied'.
Interestingly, Ashley's was also too close when she was born and we had to have her tongue clipped too!  Apparently Chloe (Vicki & Rob's oldest) has the same.  Oh, those genetics!  So glad that's over with.  Hopefully this will help when Ashley begins transitioning Vona back to breast feeding.  She's been pumping and bottle feeding Vona and supplementing with formula.  Very tedious indeed!

I got the replacement Garmin USB ANT stick today. It was super quick shipping.  Unfortunately the darn thing doesn't work.
It's not even recognized by my computer when I plug it into the USB port.  It just hasn't been my day today.  I've been stressed recently trying to make the travel arrangements for my 50th birthday (I'm taking a Western Caribbean cruise with Darvin), and I've been hassling with a claims contractor for Alamo Rental Car for the hit and run while we were in Salt Lake City.  I've been having headaches every day because my neck and back are totally out of whack, I need my chiropractor!

Just having a terrible, horrible very bad day all the way around!  I guess I'll get off my pitty party and start my Biggest Loser workout DVD to see if I can sweat out my stress and anxiety!

WEEK OF JULY 16, 2012

I got smart and ran around 6:30 a.m. this morning.  That was MUCH better.  We had a family potluck and game night and Erin and Russ's this evening that was loads of fun.  Can't wait until we live down here and can have regular family activities with the gang!
Nothing better than a good play in the toy box!

Uncle Russ what do you mean it's not all right to play in the toy box?

FRIDAY - JULY 20, 2012
No wonder I'm having trouble running.  Last night as I went to run after 10 p.m. it was still over 90 degrees!!  It's definitely time to get a hydration belt!  I hope to get one today so that I can go on my long run tonight instead of Saturday night as we'll be heading to Erin's house for a potluck/game night.  And just to put the icing on the cake, my Garmin wasn't communicating with my computer.  I was able to program the Garmin itself to manage the run, but when I got home, come to find out the USB ANT stick is broken!  I found one for half the price of the ones on the Garmin site (including shipping) so got that ordered and should receive it in about a week.  In the meantime I need to contact Costco for my purchase information so I can return the original as Garmin apparently gives a one year warranty on them.

THURSDAY - JULY 19, 2012
I woke up this morning feeling a little off balance...BOOOOO!  Hopefully it's not those darn ear crystals again!  I finally researched and found the medical name for it: Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV).  My chiropractor treats me using the Epley Maneuver, but obviously I'm not in Yakima right now!  So I'll just have to try to compensate by not bending my head down, sleeping on two pillows, not sleeping on my side, etc.  Today I want to work on getting photos posted to the blog and facebook.
I almost forgot to mention, I found out that I WON the individual competition for the Getting Healthy Challenge.  The prize was $100!  I think I'll buy a second pair of running shoes with the prize money so I can alternate using them with my current pair.  I lost a total of 17.6 pounds during the challenge and started developing some really healthy habits in my life.  I plan on continuing to follow the 7 week program on my own to help really cement the good habits.

This afternoon after I'd fed Vona and had her next to me trying to get her settled down for another nap, she lost her binky and I noticed that her tongue was black.  Uh oh!  So, I got online and did some research.  It looks like what she has is quite uncommon in infants but should resolve itself within a matter of weeks (took 7 for one case reported).  It's called Black Hairy Tongue and they believe it's caused by bacteria, yeast or fungus.  The only thing I could find online as a 'treatment' for infants is to brush or swab the tongue a couple of times a day.  Hopefully it won't freak Ashley out too much when she wakes up and finds out!

WEDNESDAY - JULY 18, 2012
And they're off!  After a rough start, their van had oil in the coolant overflow tank, Justin, Vicki, Rob and the rest of the Rude King band headed to Lubbuck for the first stop on their west coast tour.   They'll be gone for 2 weeks, so Ashley, Vona and I are on our own!  Ashley sent me to Briana's yesterday afternoon where I swam with Briana and the Pascual brothers at their apartment complex swimming pool.  The weather was supposed to reach 99 to 100 degrees and their air conditioner went out in their apartment.  The maintenance guys fixed it while we were in the pool, but it took the whole rest of the day to try to get the internal temperature down below 80 degrees!  Before I arrived when they were still waiting in their apartment Alex said to his Mommy, "Mommy it's hot out here!"  Silly little boy..Erin, Jackson and Bryn came over to play after Bryn's nap.  It was too hot to play too hard so the boys mainly watched movies together.  It's so fun to see the cousins play with each other!

TUESDAY - JULY 17, 2012
Sad day, I found out this morning that the house I LOVE in Denton is still actually available.  The realtor sent me a listing for a comparable that had a full price offer on it to give me an idea of what might be a reasonable offer.  Oh well, I still think we need to get Darvin established with a job so we can know which area to buy in so he doesn't have a long commute.

MONDAY - JULY 16, 2012

Today was a busy day.  I went house hunting with Margaret, Bethany, Avril Anderson and her husband who was our chauffeur.  It seems like we traveled all over Texas!  We went to an empty duplex in Little Elm first.  It helped me realize that I'd prefer not to buy a rental property first.  We went to other properties and found one that was perfect in Denton.  It had over 3600 square feet in the main house and an almost 400 square foot cottage in the back yard that is currently rented for $650/month.  The home was built in 1975 but was beautifully updated and had a wonderful outdoor space in the backyard.  Apparently there is a full price offer on it.  Oh well, after running around all day I came to the realization that I'm kind of putting the cart before the horse.  Darvin has not got his Texas license yet, so there's no way we can know where he'll be able to get a job.  He doesn't want a long commute, so I really need to know where he works in order to find a home nearby.  It's going to be somewhat difficult to find a house with a father-in-law quarters, there are not a lot of options.  We may need to find two separate houses that are in the same neighborhood.

WEEK of July 9, 2012

Wow, another week has flown by.  Yesterday was super fun and pure bedlam with the grandkids.  The food was great and the company was even better!  I think we were all exhausted when all was said and done.

Cousin play time! Then yesterday evening Briana took me to the Curtain Club to watch Justin, Vicki and Rob's show with their band Rude King. This morning I met Margaret at her ward for Relief Society.  She was teaching the lesson and she did an outstanding job.  She had to combine two lessons into one, a daunting task!  Her lesson was wonderful.  It was about missionary work.  She shared the experience of the youth this past Wednesday with their tracting 'Prepare the Way' experience and had the ward missionaries come talk about the results and what we can do to help in the missionary effort.  The youth's results were tremendous and the missionaries indicated that in that one hour or so that the youth went door to door they had more referrals to work with than if they'd been tracting themselves door to door for about 3 months!  I think this would be a wonderful program for our youth, so Margaret shared her information with me and the names and phone numbers of their full time missionaries so that our ward can contact them if we decided to do it. I went home to Johnson's for about an hour and then returned to the church for Sacrament meeting. When I got home to Ashley's Bethany was here visiting.  It was sure nice to see her again and to have the chance to visit.  Tomorrow I'll be out house hunting with Erin's realtor Avril Anderson and Margaret and Bethany will be joining me. Baby Vona has a follow up appointment at the doctor tomorrow afternoon.  I'm sure enjoying having the opportunity to help with another sweet grandbaby! SATURDAY - JULY 14, 2012 It should be a fun family day today.  Pascual's and Chatwin's are coming over to the Rush's for lunch and games.
Then we may all head over to Pascual's to go swimming.  I forgot to bring my swimsuit with me so Ashley and I went to Walmart last night and I bought one and she bought new swim shorts.  It's about time I bought a new one anyway as I've probably had my previous one for 10 years at least and it was getting pretty threadbare! I'm making Darvin's cousin Rohn's Pistolette recipe with baked potatoes and a Dirty Rice recipe we had found on the internet when Lance and his family visited.  Briana's bringing chicken nuggets or something like that for the kiddos and Erin's bringing something for dessert. FRIDAY - JULY 13, 2012 Today I am reminded that each day of our life is a gift from God.  One of our high school friends, Matt Clonts was diagnosed with cancer last year.  His wife has been keeping a blog of their experiences and today as I checked her updates Matt is 'stable' no progression and no regression of the cancer.  She noted in her blog that they still have the normal family stuff, sibling fighting, cranky Mom when the house is dirty, etc, but that this cancer journey that they've been placed on has helped them all to realize that each day together is a precious gift from God.  I need to remember that WITHOUT having to have someone in the family with a life threatening illness!
I got Vona 'duty' this morning.  Ashley's taking a nap and Justin went with Rob to the hardware store to get some supplies to work on the van that their band will be taking on tour.  Justin fed Vona this morning and then let me burp her.  She was wiggly like she was trying to keep herself awake, so I finally wrapped her up in her baby burrito swaddle and she went to sleep.  She's been wiggling around the last few minutes like she's trying to wake up.  She was fed 2 1/2 hours ago, so it's about time for her next feeding.  They've been trying to get her to go 3 hours between feedings in anticipation of her night time sleep training which will start when she reaches 9 pounds. THURSDAY - JULY 12, 2012
Baby Houdini works her way out of her Swaddle Me!
Hey, can a I get a little privacy here, I'm trying to take a bath!
Somebody likes her baths!
Aw, so refreshing!
I made it safely to Dallas yesterday evening.  Ashley, Justin and Vona picked me up from the airport.  What a sweet little peanut!  She has a lot of her Mommy's newborn mannerisms.  I can hear Great Grandma Clement saying, "Why is that baby so serious, what could she be thinking about?"  Vona's a little scowler!  But she has already cracked a smile or two for her Nana!  She's got 3 dimples!  On either cheek and on her chin!

Disaster averted this evening.  Alex had been looking forward to seeing Nana all day long.  We didn't get over earlier enough in the afternoon so he had a big meltdown when Briana put him down for a nap late in the afternoon. She texted me when he woke up this evening and I went over and we played.  He's developed quite the imagination.  He had me set up the tent with the connecting tunnel.
Come on Nana let's play!
And he drove me around in monster trucks and planes and trains and Nana's race car and Pops's monster truck, etc!  He was thoroughly delighted when I left the tent by squeezing through the tunnel after him!  We played and played and played and he was very happy to have Nana's undivided attention.  We put jewels on his king's crown from Burger King and he told me all about Monster Jam and the Wiggles and.....!!!  Finally read him half a dozen books, sang Twinkle Twinkle Little Star a couple of times and got him in to bed for the night! WEDNESDAY - JULY 11, 2012 I had a very enjoyable afternoon at the Pacific Science Center yesterday afternoon with Aidan, Lance and Donna.  In true Aidan style, the boy refused to take a nap before I arrived, so he was exhausted by the time we got to the Science Center.  He was still a trooper.  He enjoyed the 'petting' tide pool
and the 'wet floor' sign in the Butterfly house,
Aidan, the newest Pacific Science Center Butterfly House employee!
Beautiful butterflies AND flowers in the Butterfly House
but his favorite part of the museum was the kids play area!
Silly boy. We then headed to meet Mike, Erin and Hadley at Red Robin in Southcenter.  Unfortunately my stupid TomTom GPS took us on a detour north on the I-5 Expressway instead of south on I-5...in rush hour traffic...Thankfully Lance saw that south Hwy 99 was moving along parallel to the stop and go traffic on I-5 so we backtracked via 99.  We finally arrived close to an hour late.  They'd ordered a kids meal for Hadley in the mean time, which she refused to eat until we arrived.  As soon as we got there she started munching away.  What a little doll!  She had 3 chicken pieces on skewers and a cup of broccoli with ranch dressing.  She ate one of the pieces of chicken and proceeded to share the other two with Aidan!  She was a great diversion for Mr. Sleepyhead!  When Aidan's dinner of mac n cheese and broccoli arrived he devoured THAT too!  AND Donna and Lance had been feeding him snacks on the way to dinner.  That boy can put down his groceries!  I'll sure miss the little guy! Mike was kind enough to be our taxi service.  He followed us to the hotel, helped us unpack and then followed me to Darvin's cousin Candace Boelter's house where I parked the car for my 3 weeks away.  Then we headed to Mike's to get Molly and they took me back to the hotel.  It was a very enjoyable evening all the way around.  I felt bad though because we kept Mike up so late, he was working at 4 a.m. today!  Was so good to see him again and catch up on visiting.

I extended invitations to Mike and Erin to come visit Yakima with Hadley once I get back.  I think Hadley and Alex would get along marvelously! Got my Biggest Loser DVD workout in late last night.  I'm going to try to be creative today and walk the airport in Denver during my 1 1/2 hour layover so I don't need to worry about 45 minutes of exercise when I arrive tonight in Dallas.  If I didn't have carry on bags I'd jog the airport!  But I guess walking will have to do!

TUESDAY - JULY 10, 2012
May the travels begin...again!  Today I'll head to Seattle after I take Grandpa Clement to his doctor's appointment.  I got all of the cherries dehydrated yesterday.  The Rainiers were ready to come off the dehydrator this morning.  The Bings are still a little too moist.  Hopefully they'll be ready before I have to leave.  I feel a little sad that I dehydrated all of them since we hope to be moved to Texas by this time next year I won't have access to .50/pound u-pick cherries!  I had some people mention that they freeze theirs so I put a couple of pitted Bings in the freezer.  Darvin and I tried them this morning and they were quite tasty.  If I had a little more time, I'd go out and pick some more as Darvin said he'd pit them and freeze them.  But since I don't, if he really wanted to give me a nice surprise he would go out and pick them, pit them and freeze them!  Time to get on with my day!

I arrived and Lance and Donna's hotel about 2:15 p.m.  Lance and Aidan could see me from their window when I drove up.  Aidan was pretty excited to see me and the feeling was mutual.  We waved back and forth at each other!  When I came around to their hotel room the first thing out of his mouth was "bee-kee".  He wanted me to get out my cell phone so he could look at the picture of his beloved cousin baby Brooklyn.  Cutest thing EVER!!

MONDAY - JULY 9, 2012
Today didn't start out so well for me!  I took Abby out running with me this morning (upon Darvin's suggestion), when we arrived home hot and sweaty (temperatures have been reaching the high 90's to 100's) Darvin had locked us out and went to work.  Previously it would have been no big deal because we had a key hid in the back garage.  After we had a theft in the garage recently we got a lock for the garage door and Darvin removed the hidden key.  So I went to our neighbors and borrowed Laurie Matthew's cell phone.  I tried to get ahold of Christie Afualo first because they have a key to the house and live nearby.  No answer, I left a message in the hopes that she was in the shower or something and would see the message soon.  Then I tried to remember Darvin's cell phone number to ask him to come let us in.  Now, I am the woman that can remember my social security number, Darvin's and parts of the girls, I know Christie's number by heart, but do you think I could come up with Darvin's number?  Not even if my life had depended on it.  I called his old BiMart work number (where he hasn't worked for 6 or 7 years!) somehow I could remember that one!  But Darvin is #2 on my speed dial, who needs more than that, right?!

Well, in frustration I left and of course as I was stepping off the Matthew's porch, Darvin's number came to me.  So I rang the doorbell again and borrowed the phone again, all the time sweating all over poor Laurie's cell phone!  No answer of course!  So I left again, then thought that although Darvin usually can't get a phone call on his cell phone because he works in the basement of the hospital, sometimes a text will get through.  So once again, I ring Laurie's doorbell and ask to borrow her phone (how embarrassing!).

Then Abby and I meandered home where I checked to see if by some slim chance Darvin had left any of the windows open.  No such luck!  Abby got a drink from the dish in the back yard and then we wandered up to the front porch and sat down in the shade.  As I was sitting there it occurred to me that I could be waiting for quite a long time if neither of my messages went through and I had a visiting teaching appointment at Erin Jones' around 10 or 10:30.  I couldn't bring myself to ring Laurie's doorbell one more time, so I walked down to Nic and Clara Rasmussen's.  Clara answered the door and let me in where I looked up the hospital phone number in the phone book and proceeded to borrow HER phone to call.  When the pharmacy answered they indicated that Darvin had just left.

The rest of the day kind of went the same way!  But, when all was said and done I did get a lot done and I'm pretty well packed and ready to head to Seattle tomorrow after I take Darvin's dad to his doctor's appointment.
